Product Description
The Echoplex Preamp is one of those pedals you don't know you need until you hear your guitar playing through it. It's a multi-function pedal specializing in boosting your signal while adding a little bit of tape echo effect as well as warm overdrive when you crank it up. It's based on the EP-3 which made its way onto the records of players including Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen and Eric Johnson (enough said). Back then everyone wanted the tone conditioning ability as much as the tape echo effect. Now, you can spice up your sound with the EP-3' right on your pedalboard.
Dunlop' EP101 Echoplex Preamp features a Field-effect Transistor (FET) just like the original and follows the exact same signal path. Boost your signal up to +11dB with the Gain control giving you nice organic grit the higher you go.
The Echoplex Preamp runs on standard 9-volt power and contains power management circuitry to guarantee constant headroom performance throughout the normal life of a 9-volt battery. With a heavy-duty Phase 90-sized housing, a replica EP-3 knob, true bypass switching and a status LED, the Echoplex Preamp is built to take a beating on the road so you can leave your fragile vintage piece at home.

I used to play through an old Echoplex EP-3 until there was no one left to fix it. Missed that extra "Special Sauce" my tone used to have with that old tape unit. Voila'!!!!! This thing massages the tone nicely. The effect is very subtle, if you're looking for a drastic change in tone, it's not for you. Press the switch and you can hear exactly what this thing was made to do. I just got it and haven't had a lot of time to play with it. Tried at the end of signal chain and terrible noise coming out. Using a Line6 M13 and maybe that needs adjustment. Put it at the beginning of signal chain and BLISS!!!!!! This pedal does what it claims to do. Will probably leave this unit on constantly like my noise gate. Permanent use in other words. Built like a tank, I can see getting a lot of use from the pedal for many years. As I said, subtle change but worth it's weight in gold. Very happy!!!!Dunlop Echoplex Preamp Guitar Effects Pedal
.I bought this pedal recently and it has been out for a while. I had my eye on it for a long time. I have no regrets and feel my tone is improved with this effect. I use it "always on" either clean or with distortion, and it conditions my signal well. I had a EQ pedal that I used a a signal boost and I have replaced that EQ with this pedal. I use the Echoplex as a signal boost basically and it works well. I suppose the word I have heard used is "secret sauce" and this may be an accurate description of what this does. Basically for the money, I don't regret this purchase at all, but keep in mind what kind of effect this is, it conditions your signal, it is not a distortion or phaser or chorus etc. the best description of what I use it for is a signalboost / conditioner.
Dunlop Echoplex Preamp Guitar Effects Pedal
.I've heard other reviewers say that this pedal adds a little extra "secret sauce" to your sound. I know that you are at home reading this thinking as I did "what the heck does that mean?". Here's the rub... there's just no other good way to describe what this pedal does. It just adds a nice little extra preamp somthin' somthin'! Others have said that it is subtle and I agree - but subtle in a really effective way. And, since all my gigs are in janky little beer bars & I can never turn up my Deluxe Reverb over 2, The EchoPlex Preamp allows me to get a bit more spleen from my amp. It took me about 6 hours of playing to find where this pedal fit in my sound, but now, its a permanent part of my setup & as others have said - I just leave mine on almost all of the time. If the manufacturer is listening... This pedal would be an ideal candidate for the new micro pedals we are starting to see... think about it Dunlop...
Dunlop Echoplex Preamp Guitar Effects Pedal
.Nice pedal from MXR in a reasonably compact size box. Nice looking unit and adds just a little extra control and tone.
Probably geared for someone who likes their tone alot and wants to add a little fuel to that fire.
A subtle change in tone and focus...which at first you might not even be sure is working, then it grows on you over a few days, and soon after it becomes tough to turn it off.
Has a couple db of boost but I use it below unity gain to tame the amp a bit.
Dunlop Echoplex Preamp Guitar Effects Pedal
.Provides a nice subtle warm Boost for Blues Rock.
Dunlop Echoplex Preamp Guitar Effects Pedal
.This is a very subtle pedal. I didn't notice a huge change in sound when I first turned it on, but it does have a great effect on my tone, seem that notes in chords come through a little clearer and with a little more chime. I really love this pedal, the difference in tone can be heard in different positions in my chain. I've been playing it through a matchless clubman 35 which has a great sound on its own, but this pedal adds a little more goodness to the mix.
