Instant gratification and wows through my Fishman SA 220 SoloAmp i.e True acoustic reso sound on steroids with no feedback at extreme volumes I would never never consider playing at. Then I plugged it into my pedal box and '64' Princeton at rehearsal with the band. This is the first time I was able express what I heard in my head with the full ensemble of drums, harmonica, bass, and keyboard. Again, NO FEEDBACK with a true reso sound. My band members were smiling last night. Sonic bliss. Thank you Fishman! Good-bye Barcus-Barry, Good-bye Highlander.

At first I was going to have a local luthier install this pick up, partly because of time constraints, but after reading the online instructions, I decided I probably knew more about resonator installations, since I've done a few. It took me two hours to install. However, I wouldn't recommend someone installing this who has not had at least some experience installing new 1/4" jacks in acoustic instruments that you care about.
The only unexpected customization was that the two-piece bridge was slightly narrower than the slot in the spider; I expected to have to sand down the lower part of the maple to get a friction fit. I ended up putting a bead of silcon in the slot that made a solid fit when it set up. (I've used silicon in the past to adhere one of Fishman's old hot dot pickups on a spider resonator cone - holds tight but you can remove it easily when necessary.)
The sound quality of the Nashville spider pickup was terrific when I had finished: great bass response and a totally natural reflection of the instrument. I chose this pickup because of very good experience with many different types of Fishman pickups in the past and reading good reviews in online resonator sites.

.I have a Dobro Hound Dog Deluxe roundneck that I tune to open E and play with a bottleneck slide. The pickup that came with it (a cheaper Fishman) was a nightmare to amplify. You really had to crank the volume to get anything out of it, and you had to dial the trebs down to 1 to keep audience members' ears from bleeding. Plus, it sounded tinny and metallic like a really bad, National Steel copy or a trashcan with strings.

This little beauty isn't cheap, but worth every penny and then some. I'd pay twice the price. I first, changed out the cone for a Quarterman, had a put on a bone nut, and then my luthier installed the Fishman Nashville.

Oh man, what a difference! Now, I plug it in (through an ART preamp to boost the volume a bit) with a flat EQ, and I get a sweet, fat, rich, woody tone. It really cries the way a Dobro should. I can now focus on playing my best without worrying about unwanted overtones or piercing, tinny highs.

A former bandmate heard it and was knocked out by the difference. "Man, what did you do to your Dobro?"

I have yet to record with it, but I expect it would work well for that too.

If you play a spider-style resonator, this pickup is a must. I would take it to a pro for installation, though, and although it's hotter than the pickup that came with the guitar, it's still passive and may need a little boost from a preamp.

I plan on getting another one of these for my Regal squareneck as soon as I have the bread. I may not play like Jerry, but at least I can approximate that tone!
